{"id":42398,"date":"2016-10-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cira.ca\/blog\/highlights-canadians-connected-2016\/"},"modified":"2023-03-10T10:57:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T15:57:40","slug":"highlights-canadians-connected-2016","status":"publish","type":"cira_news","link":"https:\/\/stg-saas.cira.ca\/en\/resources\/news\/state-of-internet\/highlights-canadians-connected-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Highlights from Canadians Connected 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadians Connected 2016, CIRA&#8217;s symposium and annual general meeting, took place in Toronto at the Allstream Centre on Thursday, September 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Canadians Connected 2016, CIRA&#8217;s symposium and annual general meeting, took place in Toronto at the Allstream Centre on Thursday, September 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>CIRA Members and individuals in the Internet community gathered together to learn about the state of the Internet from CIRA president and CEO Byron Holland, lunch keynote Andy Forest, an expert panel, and keynote Sue Gardner.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some highlights from the day.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Andy Forest spoke\u00a0about young Canadians participating in\u00a0<em>maker education\u00a0<\/em>and how we can adapt the way we educate youth in a more effective way\u00a0in\u00a0the Information Age. Andy Forest is the co-founder of STEAMLabs, a non-profit community makerspace in downtown Toronto. Two projects from STEAMLabs have recieved grants from\u00a0CIRA&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/stg-saas.cira.ca\/community-investment-program\"> Community Investment Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<\/div>\n<p>CIRA president and CEO Byron Holland spoke about what CIRA is doing to help build a better online Canada. Byron touched on the outlook for the future of the Internet from both a Canadian and\u00a0global perspective. He also talked about CIRA&#8217;s current projects, including the announcement of CIRA\u00a0becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/stg-saas.cira.ca\/newsroom\/press-releases\/kiwi-turns-cira-new-back-end-registry-platform\">the back-end Registry provider for .KIWI<\/a>, and encouraged everyone to spread the word about taking the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stg-saas.cira.ca\/better-online-canada\/cira-internet-performance-test\">Internet Performance Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<\/div>\n<p>An expert panel spoke about content delivery, availability, consumption, and how it affects Canadians. The panel featured:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacques Latour, Chief Technology\u00a0Officer at CIRA,<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Clement, Professor emeritus, University of Toronto, and<\/li>\n<li>Jane Tallim, Co-Executive Director,\u00a0Media Smarts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Keynote speaker, Sue Gardner, former Director of and now special advisor to Wikipedia, took at look at the history of the Internet thus far and how it has impacted our lives, and explained how we can use what we have learned\u00a0from the past to embrace the future.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Thank you to those who attended the event in Toronto.
